痛みの定義
　痛み（＝疼痛）とは，国際疼痛学会^1）（International Association for the Study of Pain；IASP）の定義によれば，「組織の実質的または潜在的な傷害に伴う，あるいはそのような傷害を表す言葉で述べられる不快な感覚・情動体験」（pain：an unpleasant sensory and emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage, or described in terms of such damage）である．
　また，「患者が痛いというのであればそれが痛みである．」（pain is what the patient says hurts）とされるように，痛みは主観的な性格をもっている（pain is always subjective）^1）．
